TITLE: A survey of MAC protocals proposed for wireless ATM AUTHORS: J. Sanchez, R. Martinez, and M. W. Marcellin JOURNAL: IEEE Network Magazine ABSTRACT: Wireless ATM (W-ATM) Networks have been studied extensively in recent years. The extension of the ATM network services to the Wireless environment faces many interesting problems. The original ATM network was designed for high speed, noiseless, and reliable channels. None of these characteristics are applicable to the wireless channel. One of the most critical aspects of a W-ATM Network is the Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocol used by the Mobile Terminals (MT's) to request service from the BS, which has to consider the Quality of Service (QOS) of the specific application. In this paper, we analyze some recently proposed MAC protocols, particularly those for TDMA type of systems, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
